Cartooning Class

As an artist I love to experiment with different media, but being the practical type of guy that I am and as much as I am dragging my supplies around with me I will show you the few materials that I use for much of my cartooning.

These materials can be very inexpensive and as a starving artist you may need the saved cash  to buy food when the snows get high and you're breaking up furniture to throw in the fireplace for warmth...

These are the tools of the trade including a Non-Reproductive Blue Pencil which I use so that I am not erasing every line that I ever scribbled.

The Magic Wands of Cartooning!!!

Note the different types of tips these markers offer. From left to right the Sharpy, Flair and the Sanford Uni-ball micro.

Other tools that I have on hand just in case of an emergency. A white eraser, glue stick and a graphic arts blade.

Oops, I forgot the picture of the white- out, but I am sure you have seen this neat little invention that was created in the 1970's. You brush it on and hide mistakes big or small...

Creating the Magic...

Here I am demonstrating the blue pencil technique, drawing in the characters into the boxes. This one that I am drawing is a strip format, it has three panels. When I draw in the cartoon with the "blue" I only use these lines as  a guide when I ink them
.

Although I am not the all knowing guru of cartooning I am giving you a glimpse into what works for me. Remember I do a bunch of traveling and I need to pack lite so this stuff I am showing you is just what I need.

Experiment on your own with the more expensive brushes and dip pens but remember there are many hours of practice to be worked through when you start using them. The materials I have shown you here most of you use them or pens similar to them everyday so there is little or no "learning the tools" and you can jump right in and start drawing cartoons without the other learning hassles.

Here I am drawing in the characters with the Flare marker. The darker highlight lines around the characters and darker type are drawn by the Sharpie. The thinner background and character shading are produced by the Sanford Uni-ball micro.
